Meet Our Host & Speakers

Host

Gavin Peter

VP of Community and Culture, African Leadership Group

Gavin Peter believes community isn’t just something we build — it’s something we become. Whether it’s through a shared laugh, a deep conversation, or a silent understanding, Gavin lives for the magic that happens when people truly connect.
Gavin joined the African Leadership Group in 2008, three years after subscribing to an email update from Fred Swaniker about “this idea we’re working on.” That idea — of building a new kind of leadership for Africa — became his home. A place where the exceptional are not the exception. A space filled with students, staff, faculty, and yes, even peacocks, who live with courage, curiosity, and joy.
Now serving as VP of Community and Culture at ALG, Gavin sees his work as a daily act of love: nurturing belonging, shaping identity, and holding space for people to show up as their most human selves. He is rewarded, every day, by being surrounded by hope.

MESSAGE FROM

Our Founder

I believe that those of us who are privileged enough to be educated, healthy, and part of powerful networks should not be doing easy things. The only way to justify our privilege is to do the hard things that society demands of us — to solve tough problems and create opportunities for others. I launched The Room to bring the most ambitious ‘doers’ together to do these hard things that will change the world. I welcome you to be a part of our story and join this global community as we make history together.
